Your First Home Physiotherapy Visit: What to Expect
12/04/2026 · Khy Physio

Booking your first home physiotherapy visit can feel like a step into the unknown, especially if you have never had a physiotherapist come to your door before. The good news is that a mobile appointment is relaxed, unhurried and built entirely around you. Here is a plain-English walkthrough of what happens on the day, so you feel comfortable well before your physiotherapist arrives.
What a mobile physiotherapy appointment actually is
With mobile physiotherapy there is no clinic to travel to and no waiting room. A qualified physiotherapist comes to your home, retirement village, aged-care facility or wherever you are staying, and brings the equipment needed for your session. It is the same expert care you would receive in a clinic, delivered in the place where you actually live and move each day.
That home setting is one of the biggest advantages of care in your own environment. Your physiotherapist can see the real steps you climb, the chair you struggle to rise from, and the path to the bathroom you need to reach safely at night. Your treatment is grounded in your genuine daily life, not a generic exercise room.
Before the physiotherapist arrives
You do not need to do anything elaborate to get ready, but a few small things help the session run smoothly. Wear loose, comfortable clothing you can move in, and have a sturdy dining chair without armrests nearby. If you can, clear a small area of floor space so there is room to move safely.
It also helps to gather a few pieces of information so your physiotherapist can tailor your care from the very first minute:
- A current list of your medications, or the boxes themselves.
- Any recent hospital discharge summaries, scan results or referral letters from your GP or specialist.
- Details of any funding you plan to use, such as your NDIS plan, Home Care Package, DVA card or Medicare care plan.
- A short note of what you most want to improve, and any questions you would like answered.
If something is not quite ready when we arrive, that is perfectly fine. Our physiotherapists work in all kinds of homes and will help you set up on the day. When you are ready to organise a time, you can book an in-home visit online in a few minutes.
The first part of the visit: your assessment
Your physiotherapist will arrive at the agreed time, introduce themselves and confirm a few details with you. The first appointment always begins with an assessment, because a sound treatment plan depends on understanding your full picture. This part is a conversation as much as anything, so there is nothing to feel anxious about.
Talking through your history and goals
Your physiotherapist will ask about your medical history, any conditions you are managing, recent surgeries or hospital stays, and the medications you take. They will ask what prompted you to book, how your symptoms affect your day, and what you are hoping to get back to. This is the moment to mention everything that is on your mind, even things that feel small.
The physical assessment
Next, your physiotherapist will observe how you move. Depending on your situation, this may involve watching you stand up from a chair, take a few steps, reach or turn, and gently checking your strength, joint movement and balance. If pain, a recent operation or a specific injury is the reason for your visit, they will focus the assessment around that area. Nothing is pushed to the point of pain. If something is uncomfortable, simply say so and your physiotherapist will adjust.
Because the visit is in your home, your physiotherapist may also look at the practical spots that matter most to your safety and independence, such as your steps, your bed, your bathroom or the route from your chair to the kitchen. This home-based view is something a clinic simply cannot offer.
Setting your goals together
Once the assessment is complete, your physiotherapist will explain what they have found in clear, everyday language, and you will set goals together. Good goals are personal and practical, tied to the things you actually want to do: getting out of your armchair without help, walking to the letterbox with confidence, managing stairs again, easing pain so you sleep better, or feeling steadier so you worry less about falling.
These goals shape everything that follows. They give your treatment a clear direction and a way to track your progress over the weeks ahead. You are an equal partner in this conversation, and nothing is decided without you.
Treatment and your home exercise program
Many first visits include some hands-on treatment or the start of an exercise program, time permitting. Your physiotherapist might guide you through a few gentle exercises, show you a safer way to move, or use hands-on techniques to ease pain and stiffness. Before they leave, you will usually receive a simple home exercise program to work on between visits, explained clearly and pitched at the right level for you.
A first appointment typically runs for around 45 to 60 minutes, with the assessment taking up a good portion of that time. It is designed to be calm and paced to suit you. In your own home there is no rush and no crowded schedule pushing you along.
Who a first home visit suits
Home physiotherapy is well suited to anyone who finds getting to a clinic difficult, tiring or unsafe, including:
- Older adults managing frailty, reduced mobility or a fear of falling. Our physiotherapy for seniors is built around keeping you independent at home.
- People recovering after a hospital stay or surgery who need to continue their rehabilitation safely without travelling.
- NDIS participants working towards mobility, strength and independence goals in their own environment.
- Carers and families who want expert support for a loved one without the stress of transport and waiting rooms.
- People managing chronic conditions or persistent pain who benefit from care that fits around their day.
How funding works for your first visit
One of the most common worries about a first appointment is cost, so it helps to sort this out before you book. Khy Physio supports a range of funding options, and our team can talk you through which applies to your situation.
- NDIS: If physiotherapy is included in your plan, we can deliver services in your home. Learn more on our NDIS physiotherapy page.
- Home Care Package: Many older Australians use their package to fund in-home physiotherapy. See how it works on our Home Care Package page.
- Support at Home: This aged care program can also help fund mobility and strength support at home. See our Support at Home physiotherapy page.
- DVA: Eligible veterans may be able to access physiotherapy with a valid referral from their GP.
- Medicare (EPC/CDM), TAC, WorkCover and private: We work with a range of these arrangements too.
If you are not sure which option fits, that is completely normal. Our team is happy to check your eligibility and explain any out-of-pocket costs before your first visit, so there are no surprises. You can see a general overview on our funding and pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral for my first home physiotherapy visit?
Not for a private appointment, as you can book directly with us. If you are using NDIS, a Home Care Package, DVA or Medicare, a referral or care plan may be needed. We are happy to guide you through what is required for your funding, so nothing holds up your first visit.
How long does the first appointment take?
A first visit usually runs for about 45 to 60 minutes. This allows time for a thorough assessment, a conversation about your goals, and often the start of treatment or a home exercise program. Follow-up sessions are generally shorter and focused on your ongoing progress.
What if I am nervous or have not exercised in a long time?
That is very common, and there is nothing to worry about. Your physiotherapist will start gently, work at your pace and never push you into pain. Everything is explained clearly, and you can stop or ask questions at any time. Being in your own home often makes the whole experience feel more relaxed.
Do I need any special equipment ready?
No. Your physiotherapist brings the equipment needed for your session. It simply helps to have a sturdy chair without armrests nearby, a small clear space to move in, and comfortable clothing. This article is general information only. If you experience red-flag symptoms such as sudden severe pain, chest pain, signs of a stroke, or loss of bladder or bowel control with back pain, seek urgent care or call 000 straight away.
