Support at Home Physiotherapy: What Older Australians Need to Know

Support at Home Physiotherapy: What Older Australians Need to Know

If you are an older Australian receiving aged care support – or thinking about accessing it – you may have heard about the Support at Home program. From 1 July 2025, this program replaced the previous Home Care Package system and changed how many funded services, including physiotherapy, are accessed and delivered.

Understanding how Support at Home physiotherapy works can make a real difference to how well you recover, how safely you move around at home, and how long you are able to stay independent.

What Is the Support at Home Program?

The Support at Home program is a government-funded aged care initiative that helps older Australians access services they need to continue living at home safely. It is administered through My Aged Care and replaces the former Home Care Package levels 1 to 4.

Under Support at Home, eligible Australians receive a personalised budget that can be used to fund a range of services, including physiotherapy, personal care, nursing, home modifications and more. The amount of funding available depends on an assessment of your needs.

Access starts through My Aged Care. If you have not already been assessed, you can register at myagedcare.gov.au or call 1800 200 422.

Is Physiotherapy Included in Support at Home?

Yes. Physiotherapy is one of the allied health services that can be funded through Support at Home, provided it is included in your care plan and approved as part of your budget.

Physiotherapy helps older Australians:

  • Maintain strength, balance and mobility as they age
  • Reduce the risk of falls, which is one of the leading causes of hospitalisation in older Australians
  • Recover after surgery, illness or a hospital stay
  • Manage chronic conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis and Parkinson’s disease
  • Maintain independence in everyday activities like walking, getting in and out of chairs, and using stairs

Your Support at Home care plan is developed with your provider and care coordinator to reflect your individual goals. If physiotherapy is important to maintaining your safety and independence at home, it can be built into your plan.

Why In-Home Physiotherapy Makes Sense for Support at Home Clients

For many older Australians, getting to a clinic regularly is not straightforward. Transport can be difficult, appointments can be tiring, and familiar routines are disrupted. In-home physiotherapy removes these barriers entirely.

When a physiotherapist comes to your home, treatment happens in the environment where it matters most. Exercises are tailored to your actual living space. Fall risk is assessed in your real surroundings. The physiotherapist can see the stairs you need to manage, the chair you use each morning, and the bathroom setup that may pose a challenge.

This kind of practical, environment-specific care is exactly what Support at Home physiotherapy is designed to support.

How Khy Physio Works with Support at Home Clients

Khy Physio delivers mobile physiotherapy across Melbourne for Support at Home clients. Our physiotherapists travel directly to your home, bringing all equipment needed for assessment and treatment.

We work with your care coordinator or case manager to ensure your physiotherapy sessions align with your care plan and funding. You do not need to navigate the paperwork on your own.

Depending on your Support at Home budget, you may be able to access our services with reduced or no out-of-pocket cost.

If you are unsure whether physiotherapy is included in your current plan, or if you would like to request it be added at your next review, our team can help explain what to ask for.
