Physiotherapy Funding Options in Australia: Your Complete Guide
Understanding your physiotherapy funding options in Australia can feel overwhelming - especially when you're already dealing with a health condition or recovery. The good news is that most Australians have access to at least one funding pathway that can reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs. This guide breaks down each option clearly so you can access the care you need.

Why Knowing Your Physiotherapy Funding Options Matters
Many people pay privately for physiotherapy without realising they qualify for subsidised or fully funded care. Knowing your physiotherapy funding options in Australia means you can get the right treatment more often, for longer – and focus on your recovery rather than the bill.
At Khy Physio, we accept a wide range of funding types and can help guide you through the process.
NDIS Physiotherapy
If you have an approved NDIS plan that includes physiotherapy, you can access mobile physio sessions at home without any out-of-pocket costs.
Physiotherapy is typically funded under two NDIS budget categories:
- Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living – for therapy aimed at building skills and independence
- Core Supports – for assistance with daily activities
As a registered NDIS provider, Khy Physio works with plan-managed, self-managed, and NDIA-managed participants. We handle all the documentation and provide progress reports for plan reviews.

DVA Physiotherapy
Veterans holding a DVA Gold Card can access unlimited physiotherapy with no gap payment. White Card holders can access physiotherapy for conditions accepted by DVA.
Khy Physio is a DVA-approved provider offering mobile DVA physiotherapy across Melbourne. We bill DVA directly, so there are no upfront costs for eligible veterans.

My Aged Care and Home Care Packages
My Aged Care is the Australian Government’s gateway to aged care services, including physiotherapy. There are two main pathways:
Home Care Packages (HCP)
Home Care Packages are funded packages at four levels (Level 1-4) that allow older Australians to access a range of services at home, including physiotherapy. If your package includes allied health funding, you can use it to access mobile physio sessions without paying out of pocket.
Support at Home Program
The Support at Home program replaced the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) in 2025. It provides entry-level support for older Australians who need some help at home. Physiotherapy may be included depending on your assessed needs.
To access either program, you need to be assessed through My Aged Care. You can call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or visit myagedcare.gov.au to start the process.

Medicare and Chronic Disease Management Plans
Medicare does not directly fund standard physiotherapy. However, if your GP puts you on a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, you may be eligible for up to 5 allied health visits per calendar year at a subsidised rate.
To qualify, you need:
- A chronic condition (e.g. diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, Parkinson’s disease)
- A GP who agrees that physiotherapy is part of your management plan
- A Medicare card
The Medicare rebate for physiotherapy is currently around $58-60 per session. You will typically have a gap payment depending on your provider’s fee.
TAC Physiotherapy
If you were injured in a transport accident in Victoria, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) may cover your physiotherapy costs. TAC-funded physiotherapy is available for injuries caused by a road accident, including as a driver, passenger, cyclist, or pedestrian.
You will need a claim number from TAC before your first appointment. Khy Physio is a TAC provider.

WorkCover Physiotherapy
If you have a workplace injury and an active WorkCover claim, physiotherapy is covered under your claim. Your treating GP will refer you for physiotherapy as part of your injury management plan.
Khy Physio accepts WorkCover referrals for mobile home visits, which is particularly valuable for patients with limited mobility or transport.

Private Health Insurance
Most extras cover policies include physiotherapy rebates. The amount varies depending on your fund and level of cover. You can claim using your health fund card at the time of your appointment (HICAPS). Contact your insurer to confirm your yearly physiotherapy limit before booking.
Khy Physio provides mobile physiotherapy across Melbourne for older Australians accessing services through My Aged Care, Home Care Packages, and the Support at Home program. If you’d like to find out how we can help, contact our team or call 0410 803 034. We respond within 24 hours.
